Owning a business can be a way to create additional income and build something of your own. It might be a traditional business, a service you provide locally, or an online business of some type. Starting part-time gives you a way to explore an idea alongside your existing work.

WHY PEOPLE START BUSINESSES

There are plenty of reasons:

• Make more money.
• Be your own boss.
• Gain flexibility in your work schedule.
• Pursue personal growth.
• Create a sense of accomplishment.
• Have a chance to make a difference.

Those reasons may motivate you, but they do not explain why a customer will buy from you. For that, you need to look beyond yourself.

A GOOD IDEA DOESN'T HAVE TO BE ORIGINAL

A misconception many people have is that they need to come up with something no one has ever thought about. That can lead them to overlook much more practical opportunities.

The best ideas are often based on improving something that already works. I don't mean stealing another person's work. I mean finding a business you like that is already doing well, then figuring out how to provide the product or service:

Faster. Cheaper. Better.

Could you deliver it 10% faster? Could you reduce the customer's cost? Could you improve the quality? Those are questions worth exploring. A small improvement that customers value may be more useful than an entirely new idea they don't understand.

SOLVE THE CUSTOMER'S PROBLEM

Your business idea needs to solve a problem real people have or fulfill a real desire.

Don't start a business only to solve your problem—needing more money—or fulfill your desire—loving your hobby. Those motivations are understandable, but the customer is deciding whether your offer helps them.

Start with the customer's needs. Learn what they want, what frustrates them, and what they are willing to pay to change.

WRITE A SIMPLE BUSINESS PLAN

Here is the basic plan without the fluff:

1. Identify specifically who your market is.

The wrong answer is “everyone.” A narrower target or niche makes it easier to understand the customer and shape an offer for that customer.

2. Identify what makes you unique or special.

The world doesn't need another business unless you can explain why someone should buy from you instead of a competitor—or instead of buying nothing at all. Try explaining that in 30 seconds. That is the purpose of your elevator speech.

3. Decide how you will reach your market in a cost-effective way.

Having a useful product or service is only part of the work. You also need a practical way to put your offer in front of the right people.

These three points can fit into a couple of pages. They won't replace every financial and operational detail you will eventually need, but they can reveal whether your idea is clear enough to test.

Start with a real problem, a specific customer, and a useful improvement. Then put the plan on paper and begin learning from the people you hope to serve.
